Another Stiff Povot

 Tuesday 15th July

Another visit to Broadway today to continue with the checking of the operation of the pointwork. The seized compensator that we removed last weeik has now been replaced with a spare one. We were unable to free up the seized one using brute force - it will need some heat.

Manhandling it off platform 2

And bolting it into position - works fine now.

Meanwhile at the other compensator position we had to reduce the length of one of the rodding runs which needed the re-drilling of the bolt holes for the connectors:

We then progressed up to the North sidings where the rodding is directed at right angles via a crank under the tracks to the headshunt points where this rodding run will eventually be connected. These points are currently operated by hand lever.
So, communicating with Peter W in the signal box by phone, when the point lever was tried, it would not move. It became obvious that there was another seizure!
And here is the culprit hiding in the undergrowth

This adjustable angle crank would not pivot so it had to be removed.
This turned out to be another one needing heat!

Back at the workshop at Winchcombe we continue to recondition signal parts from the Gotherington distant signals

Note that we are getting very much more organised with racking to store parts -

We are very happy with our new working conditions!
There is still a lot of "stuff" in the old carriage workshop/messroom that needs sorting out or throwing away though.

  1. A pity that the pointwork at Broadway had been let to sit for so long (other than the manually operated items needed to have the engine run around - or were they not doing that?), making work for you all.

Still, it sounds like none of it has decayed to the point that it was turned into scrap - I hope! Let's hope the heat does the trick! And the new quarters look wonderful!

Thanks for taking the time and energy to do this update - it was appreciated!

  2. Excellent blog. Always an update from S&T. Got to admit that in the last 2 pictures, when I first saw the views of the signal ladder, I thought you had gone in for building miniature railway trackwork!! LOL. Hopefully it will not be too long until Broadway box is operational, for the usage of the components should help to keep them from seizing. Thanks for the update.
    Regards, Paul.
